I am an IT Guy Professional. I’ve hit the road as a tech for companies like NCR, AT&T and the US ARMY. I am currently a work for the largest high school in my school district as a(n) Technical Go-Boy Information Technology Support Tech Systems Administrator. By my lonesome, I support over 150 faculty and staff members, and over 1200 students. Daily, my responsibilities flow from Bench Tech to Systems Operator to Systems Admin to Network Engineer. These are my current duties according to the official job description:
- Provides technical support to users of computer software and hardware such within the district’s elementary schools.
- Diagnoses malfunctions and operating difficulties with software applications, networking systems, etc., and resolves problems to maximize operational effectiveness and efficiency.
- Maintains Microsoft operating systems, Novell Netware software, Novell GroupWise Email, NT Servers, UPS equipment, tape backup hardware and software, and other workstation- and server-based software.
- Effectively troubleshoots and supports PC hardware, servers, printers, and other peripherals. Receives and responds to Help Desk inquiries from staff members regarding technology problems.
- Installs/replaces hardware as needed.
- Researches and recommends appropriated software for users’ needs; installs software and updates.
- Provides assistance to users on-site, and performs training sessions as required. Utilizes tools to remotely solve problems when possible. Coordinates, conducts and/or attends staff training on hardware and software systems.
- Prepares hardware and software use instructions for distribution to District staff.
In the Army I:
- Install, operate, and perform unit maintenance on multi-functional/multi-user information processing systems and peripheral equipment and auxiliary devices.
- Perform input/ output data control and bulk data storage operations.
- Transfer data between information processing equipment and systems.
- Troubleshoot automation equipment and systems to the degree required for isolation of malfunctions to specific hardware or software.
- Restores equipment to operation by replacement of line replaceable unit (LRU).
- Assists in the design, preparation, editing, and testing of computer programs.
- Modifies existing application packages using application and operating system software and appropriate computer language commands and files.
