Got an email from security concerning a virus. in the email was listed specific machines by ip address. not real helpful to list machines by IP address in a dynamic environment. most times you can just use ipconfig -a <IPADDRESS> or nslookup <IPADDRESS> to get the hostname. Didn’t work for me, it just returned the ipaddress. One of the other techs suggested going thru and adding a domain to all machines. No time for that now, though. I busted my head for about 10 minutes before I remembered that I already have some ‘ware that does this for me. Booyah, baby – I looked and found NETSCANE.EXE!!!
From the publisher’s site:
[netscanner is a] multi-threaded IP, SNMP and NetBIOS scanner with a modern interface and several advanced features. It is intended for both system administrators and general users who are interested in computer security. The program pings computers, scans for listening TCP ports and displays which types of resources are shared on the network (including system and hidden). In addition, it allows you to mount shared resources as network drives, browse them using Windows Explorer, filter the results list and more.
