Site Realign, New Host and other randomness
Site Realign
So if you’re seeing this, then you’ve obviously seen the site realign. Nothing has changed; I just combined a couple pages into one and moved some posts around. I have an issue with the table of contents though. The author of this theme used a nonstandard function to call the pages. It does many very ugly things:
- It forces pages to be loaded in alphabetical order. There is no way to change the page order. Not with a plug-in or anything. I’ve considered commenting out the function and using the WP standard. But then I don’t know what that’ll do to the CSS. Prolly nothing, but I don’t have time to fiddle with it right now.
- The function lists all pages whether they’re child pages or not. One trick to keeping pages out of the normal list is to make them children. Nesting them sometimes keeps them off lists. No so here. It don’t matter what I do, all pages are listed as if they were on the same level.
BOOOOO!
Just a word to you guys out there cobbling these themes together: I love your hard work. I’m willing to p for it in credit or cash. But please - PUH LEEZE - keep to standards as much as possible. This just makes it easier for everyone.
New Host
We’re about to take our little Wexperiment to the next level. I’ve been running all my sites from a single shared hosting account. Host Monster has been great an all, but some of their restrictions have been preventing me from taking my little world to the next level. It’s time for a VPS. For those who don’t know what a VPS is - Google it. But my Mu site, Real Sports Bloggers, has been suffering on a shared host. That and every few weeks I get suspended because Mu eats a lot of resources.
First, I’ll move this site. Then I’ll move RSB… and if the world doesn’t implode everything will be moving. Then I can have real fun with the command line and stuff. I won’t have to set tickets to have simple things done like wildcard domains. Pretty soon, I’ll start hosting multiple websites from my mu installation. YAY.
Benefits
- I have some cool fellas who help me at the sports site. Because I’m on a shared account, I couldn’t give them remote access, that woulda been rude to my other customers. Host Monster would not create cPanel accounts for them, so I was screwed: either give these guys access to my entire cPanel or languish by my lonesome. Don’t get me wrong, I love these guys, adding them to my little business would only have improved things. But it was a tremenda-hassle. Now that’s fixed!
- I don’t have to beg tech support to create cName records or A records. this means I can start using the multi-site functions inherent in Mu. Wordpress.com uses WPMU and they allow their users to purchase domains. I can do that too. Plus another site ‘Get Shopped’ uses mu and a few other plug-ins that I’m familiar with in, and uses them in an unusual way… but I could never do anything like that on a shared hosting plan.
- I won’t get suspended if I decide to use some of WPMU’s more resource intensive features. I had one feature that got me booted every single time a user clicked it. Seriously. no. SERIOUSLY.
That’s it for now. I’ll be posting my master plan at some point.
Holla at ya boy when you see him in the street.
